Welcome to the new school year! A time to meet new students and greet returning students from a summer break that seemed to go by too fast!
The year ahead is full of activities, responsibilities, and goals to meet. So, it is natural to begin to feel a little overwhelmed with all the things you need to accomplish. Stress can settle in as you worry about how to juggle all the tasks on your list.
Whether in your professional life at school or personal life at home, learning how to set your priorities effectively helps you overcome the fear and worry of juggling lots of balls.
That’s why it’s important to identify what balls you’re juggling: Crystal balls or Rubber balls. If you drop a rubber ball, you can come back and pick it up later. However, if you drop a crystal ball, it will shatter and it’s a missed opportunity. Understanding the differences can help you effectively manage your priorities in life.
The challenge is to properly label each ball and then use that information to effectively manage your time. For example in your personal life, your young child can be identified as a crystal ball.
You want to be present during formative years to not miss out on something you could never get back. At school, teaching your course for student success is a crystal ball. Taking the time to have them learn and acquire new skills for student growth is the reward.
Here’s a quick activity for setting priorities effectively:
- Make a list of all your priorities. List separately by your personal life and professional life
- Think through and identify each one as a crystal ball or a rubber ball
- Identify what matters most so the cherished crystal balls in our lives maintain their beauty and get the attention they deserve
- Decide on dates you will work on your crystal balls even if it means to adjust your schedule to make sure they get the most attention
Setting priorities in the right order can make the school year a little easier and a little less stressful.
